The classic pedestal sink works equally well in modern, rustic, or classic bathrooms. There are hundreds of iterations on the market; we've narrowed our choices based on subtle variations in basin, corner, and apron shapes, as well as in the edging and the foot. The majority of our selections are available with a single hole for a center faucet or three holes for a 4-inch spread faucet or for an 8-inch spread faucet.

Last week, on a quick visit to London, I visited Labour & Wait with Christine: we spotted this diminutive, well-priced utility sink at Labour & Wait in Shoreditch, which would work equally well in a guest bath, laundry room, or as an outdoors sink in the garden. (I didn't bring the sink back in my suitcase, but I did bring this home.) Contact Labour & Wait for ordering information.

Did you know that Italian architect Gio Ponti designed an elegant washbasin for the Palazzo Montecatini? And that it's in production, courtesy of Rapsel in Italy? I didn't, and now I'm imagining excuses for a bath remodel. Here's a roundup of five architect-designed sinks:

Above: The most elegant washbasin we've seen: The wall-mounted Montecatini by Gio Ponti is available in titanic resin or in ceramic. Note the drain located to the right of the basin; pure genius. For information, go to Rapsel.

DIY: Galvanized Bucket as Bathroom Sink

Is the multi-purpose galvanized tub the most useful invention ever? It's cheap, durable, rust resistant, and can even be used as an ad hoc sink.

I spotted this example of galvanized tub genius on my annual trip home to Sweden last year, at the garden and home decor store Enkla Ting. Kajsa, the store owner, is an avid gardener; when she isn't potting plants or weeding her flower beds, she writes an inspiring blog where she posts about her home projects. Kajsa made her own sink by using a galvanized vintage tub for the store's bathroom. Recreate this look with the following items:
